For a flight before 8 a.m., the most dependable way to reach the airport is a pre-booked private ride. The car and chauffeur are confirmed the day before, the pickup time is fixed, and nobody is hunting for a rideshare at 3:30 a.m. Work backwards from your departure: allow the airline’s recommended arrival window, add your drive time, then add a cushion. This guide shows how to do that in Toronto and Southern Ontario, and how to book and prepare so the morning runs quietly.

Book an airport transfer

TL;DR

  • Plan to arrive at least 2 hours before a domestic flight and 2 to 3 hours before an international one, per Global Affairs Canada. Many airports ask for 3 hours on U.S. and international trips.
  • Early flights mean very early departures. TTC’s airport express does not start until about 5:30 a.m. Monday to Saturday and 8:15 a.m. on Sunday, so a 6 a.m. flight cannot realistically use it.
  • Book the ride a day or more ahead, share your flight number and confirm the pickup address, luggage and passenger count.
  • Work out your leave time from the flight backwards, then add a buffer you are comfortable with.
  • Nero Limo offers airport transfers with flight monitoring and meet and greet across Toronto and Southern Ontario. Published rates are on our flat rates page.

How early you need to be at the airport

Every early-morning plan starts with one number: the time you should be at the terminal. Global Affairs Canada’s pre-boarding checklist gives a baseline of 2 hours before a domestic flight and 2 to 3 hours before an international one, and tells travellers to check airline and airport websites for more detail.

Airports across the country say much the same thing:

  • YVR recommends at least 2 hours for domestic flights and at least 3 hours for U.S. and international flights.
  • Halifax Stanfield recommends at least 2 hours domestic and 3 hours international, and notes that the time covers parking, check-in, security and getting to the gate.
  • Edmonton International asks for a minimum of 2 hours domestic and 3 hours international, and suggests checking flight status before you leave home.

The pattern is consistent, so use it for Toronto Pearson too, and confirm with your airline, since airline guidance can be stricter than the airport’s. If you are flying to the U.S. or overseas at 7 a.m., you are looking at being at the terminal around 4 a.m. That sets the rest of the morning.

Why early flights feel harder than they are

The flight itself is rarely the problem. The trouble is the chain of small things stacked in the dark: an alarm, a last-minute bag zip, a rideshare that is not available, a street that is quiet but unfamiliar. A fixed, pre-arranged pickup removes the most uncertain link in that chain, which is how you physically get to the terminal.

Working out when to leave

Here is a simple method. Start with the scheduled departure time and subtract three things:

  1. The arrival buffer (2 hours domestic, 3 hours international or U.S. is a common airport recommendation).
  2. The drive time from your door to the terminal.
  3. Your own cushion for loading luggage, a missed turn or a slow start.

The result is the latest sensible time to leave. It is not a guarantee, so treat it as the edge of your plan, not the middle.

A worked example

Say you are flying domestically from Toronto Pearson at 6:30 a.m. These are illustrative numbers, not a promise about your route:

Step Time
Departure 6:30 a.m.
Arrive at terminal (2 hours before) 4:30 a.m.
Drive time, for example 40 minutes 3:50 a.m.
Personal cushion, for example 15 minutes 3:35 a.m.

In this example you would ask for a 3:35 a.m. pickup. For an international flight at the same time, you would move everything an hour earlier. If you are coming from Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville or Niagara, your drive is longer than the example, so adjust before you book. Our guide to Pearson airport transportation tips goes through the terminal side of this in more detail.

Check in online first

YVR advises checking in online, usually from 24 hours before departure, and confirming reservations and baggage rules several days ahead. Global Affairs Canada’s checklist adds checking terminals, baggage rules, security wait times and flight status. Doing this the afternoon before means that at 3 a.m. you only have to walk out the door.

Does public transit work for a dawn flight?

Sometimes, but often not. Transit schedules are built around the working day, and the first departures of the morning are exactly when early flights need you to be at the airport.

At Toronto Pearson, the TTC’s 900 Airport Express runs approximately 5:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday to Saturday and 8:15 a.m. to 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, with a trip of about 20 to 25 minutes. The 52A Lawrence West starts around 5:30 a.m. seven days a week and takes about 50 minutes off-peak and 75 minutes at peak. Both are real options for a mid-morning flight. For a 6 a.m. flight with a 4 a.m. arrival target, both start too late.

Pearson bus start times and journey durations compared

Elsewhere in Canada it varies. In Ottawa, Route 105 runs 24 hours a day every 30 minutes. In Victoria, BC Transit’s expansion added airport trips from about 5:14 a.m. on weekdays. If you are travelling from Southern Ontario, check the specific operator for your starting point.

Even where a bus does run, think about the luggage. BC Transit, for example, asks passengers to keep bags on their laps or on the floor and out of the aisle. With two suitcases, a stroller and a child, that is a lot to manage at 4 a.m.

Once you are at Pearson

One useful detail: Pearson’s Terminal Link train runs 24 hours between Terminals 1 and 3 and Viscount station, a 2 to 8 minute ride, with maximum waits of 4 minutes between 3:30 and 8 a.m. That matters if you are being dropped at a different terminal from your check-in or if you are connecting from a hotel nearby.

Ride options compared for an early start

Ottawa’s airport lists taxis, rideshare, hotel shuttles, charter buses and pre-arranged services as its ground options and recommends airport-authorized transportation for safety. Most major airports have a similar menu. Here is how they differ when your pickup is before sunrise:

Option What to think about at 3 or 4 a.m.
Public transit Limited early service; luggage handling; transfers
Taxi or rideshare Availability on the night; no fixed arrival time unless pre-booked
Hotel shuttle Only if your hotel runs one at your time; fixed stops
Parking and driving You drive tired; parking and shuttle time must be added to your buffer
Pre-booked chauffeur Fixed pickup time, confirmed in advance, door to terminal

If you are comparing the choices more broadly, our airport transportation options page lays them out side by side.

How to book an early-morning airport ride

A good booking takes five minutes and prevents most of the problems people associate with early flights. Here is the order we suggest.

  1. Book as soon as you have your flight. Do not wait for the night before. Early-morning slots are the ones travellers need most, and a confirmed booking removes a decision from your morning.
  2. Give the full flight number and airline. It tells the dispatcher which terminal you need and lets them track your flight for changes.
  3. State the pickup address precisely. Condo towers, hotels and gated communities have more than one entrance. Add the entrance and any access code.
  4. Count passengers and bags honestly. Skis, golf bags, strollers and several large suitcases change the vehicle you need.
  5. Request child seats in advance. If you are travelling with a child, ask for a booster or child seat when you book.
  6. Confirm the pickup time with the chauffeur’s contact details. You should know who is collecting you and how to reach them.
  7. Prepare the night before. Passports, boarding passes, chargers and medications by the door. Check in online and look at the flight status.

What it costs with Nero Limo

Our airport transfer rates are published, so you can plan before you ask. Our flat rates page lists Airport Transfer Service from $83 up to $1,670, depending on the trip. Add-ons are listed too: an extra stop is $25 CAD, a child or booster seat is $20 CAD and the Pearson Airport fee is $17.25 CAD. Check the page for the rate that fits your route.

If you are travelling with family or a group

Early flights with children or several adults need a little more thought. Everyone wakes at the same hour, bags are heavier and a missed step affects the whole party.

  • Pick a vehicle for the luggage, not just the people. Four adults with four large cases is a different request from four adults with carry-ons. Tell us the numbers when you book.
  • Add a child seat. If a little one is travelling, ask for a booster or child seat when booking so it is in the car when it arrives.
  • Stage the bags. Put luggage by the door the night before so loading takes minutes.
  • Plan a stop only if you need one. A pick-up of a friend or relative on the way can be added as an extra stop, but it adds time, so build it into your leave time.
  • Ask about larger vehicles for bigger parties. Our services include group transportation, including Sprinter van bookings. Tell us your party size and we will advise what fits.

For travellers leaving from Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton or the Niagara region, intercity transportation is an option, with a longer drive that you should factor into the leave-time sum above.

Business travellers and early departures

Executives and travel managers often have the earliest flights of all: the 6 a.m. to Montreal, the 7 a.m. to New York, the first connection to an overseas meeting. For them the ride is part of the working day, and predictability matters more than anything.

A chauffeur who tracks your flight, knows your terminal and meets you where you need to be lets you use the drive. You can take a call, review notes or simply rest. If you are managing travel for a team, we can coordinate several pickups at once. Our guide to how chauffeur services work for business travellers explains how, and our chauffeur service page covers what to expect for airport rides.

Perspective: why we treat early rides differently

We have learned that an early-morning airport ride is not a smaller version of a daytime one. It is a different job. The passenger has had little sleep, the roads are quiet and everyone’s margin for error is thin.

That is why we do more than send a car. We plan the pickup with you, confirm the details, monitor your flight and stay in contact through real-time communication, so that if something changes, we hear about it before you do.

Our approach is to combine the personal attention of a boutique company with the operational discipline we use for corporate roadshows and large events. For you, that means one person you can reach and a pickup time you can rely on. If you are leaving before dawn, that is the one thing you should not have to think about.

Late or disrupted rides: what to do

Most early rides go exactly as planned, and a booking with a named contact makes any problem easier to handle. Keep these steps in mind:

  • Save the dispatcher and chauffeur numbers in your phone the evening before.
  • Call early, not at the last minute. If your pickup time passes and you have not heard from anyone, phone straight away rather than waiting.
  • Tell us about flight changes. A delay or an earlier departure should be shared with us. We monitor flights, but you know your airline’s messages first.
  • Keep your documents and check-in done. With online check-in complete and no checked bag to drop, you have more flexibility if you are running tight. Confirm baggage rules with your airline.
  • Contact your airline if you may miss the cut-off. Only the airline can tell you your options for rebooking.

Early-morning checklist

Use this the night before:

  • Flight status checked and online check-in done
  • Passport or ID, boarding pass and any travel documents together
  • Baggage within your airline’s rules
  • Pickup address, entrance and access code sent to your chauffeur
  • Chauffeur and dispatcher contact numbers saved
  • Phone and power bank charged
  • Child seat requested if needed
  • Alarm set with a margin, not to the last minute

FAQ

How early should I leave for a 6 a.m. flight from Toronto Pearson?

Start from the airport’s recommended arrival time: 2 hours for a domestic flight and 2 to 3 hours for an international one, according to Global Affairs Canada. Then subtract your drive time and a cushion. For a domestic 6 a.m. flight, that usually means being at the terminal around 4 a.m. and leaving home well before that.

Can I take the TTC to Pearson for an early flight?

The 900 Airport Express starts at approximately 5:30 a.m. Monday to Saturday and 8:15 a.m. on Sunday, and the 52A starts around 5:30 a.m. daily. That works for later flights but not for a pre-dawn arrival. Check the TTC page for current times.

When should I book an early-morning airport ride?

As soon as your flight is confirmed. Booking ahead lets you fix the pickup time, share your flight number and request extras such as a child seat. Our rates page lists the child or booster seat at $20 CAD.

Does Nero Limo monitor my flight?

Yes. Flight monitoring is part of our airport transfer service, along with meet and greet. Give us your airline and flight number when you book so we can follow any changes.

Can you take a group to the airport early in the morning?

Yes, we handle group transportation including Sprinter van bookings. Tell us how many passengers and how much luggage you have, and we will suggest the right vehicle. See our services for the full list.
