A Region Built on the Grand River
Waterloo Region sits within the Haldimand Tract, the land along the Grand River set aside for the Six Nations in 1784, and it is part of the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Neutral peoples.
Around 1800, Mennonite families from Pennsylvania began arriving by covered wagon, and in 1805 a group of them formed the German Company to buy a large block of land along the river. German immigrants followed, and the town of Berlin grew into a busy manufacturing centre. In 1916, during the First World War, residents voted to rename it Kitchener. Today, the region’s German roots are celebrated every fall at Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, which began in 1969 and has become one of the largest Oktoberfest celebrations outside Germany.
The region reinvented itself in the second half of the 20th century. The University of Waterloo opened in 1957, and in 1984 a small company called Research In Motion was founded in Waterloo, later creating the BlackBerry. The Regional Municipality of Waterloo was formed in 1973, the same year the towns of Galt, Preston, and Hespeler joined together to become the City of Cambridge.
Getting Around Waterloo Region
The region is compact at its core but spreads out quickly. Highway 401 runs along the south edge through Cambridge, and the stretch between Cambridge and Milton is one of the busiest in the province. The Conestoga Parkway carries traffic through Kitchener and Waterloo, while Highway 8 connects the two cities to the 401. The ION light rail links uptown Waterloo and downtown Kitchener but doesn’t yet reach Cambridge, and once you leave the cities, transit options drop off fast.
Out in the townships, you’ll share the road with farm equipment and horse-drawn buggies, especially around Elmira and St. Jacobs. In winter, snow squalls can sweep across the open countryside with little warning. In normal traffic, it’s about 50 minutes from Cambridge and roughly an hour from Kitchener or Waterloo. The 401 between Cambridge and Milton can add a lot of time at rush hour, so we plan your pickup with that in mind.
