From the Head of the Lake to Steeltown
Long before it was a city, the land at the western tip of Lake Ontario was known as the Head of the Lake. It is the traditional territory of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee, and Mississaugas, and it is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum agreement.
Before dawn on June 6, 1813, British troops launched a surprise attack on an American army camped at Stoney Creek, a battle that helped keep the Niagara region in British hands. The battlefield is now a park and museum. A few years later, George Hamilton laid out a town on his farmland, and the growing settlement took his name. In 1835, Sir Allan MacNab completed Dundurn Castle, a grand Italianate villa overlooking the harbour. MacNab later became premier of the Province of Canada, and his home still stands as one of the city’s best-known landmarks.
Steel shaped the city’s next chapter. Stelco was formed in 1910 and Dofasco in 1912, and the mills along the bay earned Hamilton its nickname, Steeltown. In 2001, the city amalgamated with Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough, Glanbrook, and Stoney Creek to form the City of Hamilton we know today.
Getting Around Hamilton
Hamilton is split in two by the Niagara Escarpment, which locals simply call “the Mountain.” Getting between the lower city and the upper city means using one of the mountain accesses, like the Claremont Access or the Jolley Cut, and those steep, winding roads can be slow at rush hour and slippery in winter. The Lincoln Alexander Parkway and the Red Hill Valley Parkway form a ring around much of the city, while the QEW and Highway 403 carry traffic toward Toronto, Niagara, and Brantford. Traffic around the Burlington Skyway and the 403 near Aldershot often backs up at peak times, and ongoing construction downtown can add delays.
Outside the urban core, Flamborough and Glanbrook are largely rural, with farmland, conservation areas, and quiet country roads. Weather can also change as you climb, and the Mountain often sees more snow than the lower city.
