Where the Railroad Ended and Industry Began
Southwestern Ontario is home to many Indigenous nations, including the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Lenape peoples. Communities such as the Chippewas of the Thames, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, the Delaware Nation at Moraviantown, and Walpole Island First Nation, whose territory has never been ceded, remain here today.
The region played a major role in early Canadian history. In October 1813, the Shawnee leader Tecumseh was killed at the Battle of the Thames near present-day Chatham-Kent. A few decades later, Southwestern Ontario became the final stop on the Underground Railroad for thousands of freedom seekers escaping slavery in the United States. Places like the Buxton National Historic Site and Josiah Henson’s former home in Dresden still tell their stories.
Industry and culture followed. In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made the world’s first long-distance telephone call between Brantford and Paris. Ford of Canada was founded in Walkerville, now part of Windsor, in 1904, helping make the city a centre of Canada’s auto industry. And in 1953, the Stratford Festival staged its first season in a tent beside the Avon River, growing into one of the largest classical theatre festivals in North America.
Getting Around Southwestern Ontario
The defining road here is Highway 401, which runs nearly 400 kilometres from Toronto to Windsor. It’s long, straight, and busy with transport trucks, and construction zones can slow things down at any time of year. Highway 402 connects London to Sarnia and the Blue Water Bridge, Highway 403 links Brantford and Woodstock to Hamilton, and Highway 8 winds from Kitchener through Stratford toward Goderich and Lake Huron.
