Where the Rivers Begin
The hills and valleys of Dufferin have long been part of the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples, and much of the county falls within treaties signed with Anishinaabe nations in 1818. European settlers began clearing farms here in the early 1800s, drawn by rich soil despite the rugged terrain. In the 1840s, a Connecticut-born businessman named Orange Lawrence bought a mill site on the Credit River, and the growing village took his name. When the Toronto, Grey and Bruce Railway reached Orangeville in 1871, the town became a busy rail and market centre for the surrounding farm country.
Dufferin County was formed in 1881 from parts of Simcoe, Wellington, and Grey counties. It was named after Lord Dufferin, who served as Governor General of Canada from 1872 to 1878, and Orangeville became the county town. Local traditions run deep here. Shelburne has hosted the Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship since 1951, and Orangeville’s historic Opera House in the town hall is still home to live theatre today.
Travelling the Dufferin Highlands
Getting around Dufferin County is a different experience from driving in the city. Highway 10 is the main route south toward Brampton and Mississauga, Highway 9 heads east toward Highway 400, and Highway 89 links Shelburne with Alliston. Beyond those, you’ll find winding roads through the Hockley Valley, long rural lanes, and gravel concessions that don’t always show up clearly on a GPS.
Winter is the real test. The open farmland north of Orangeville is known for blowing snow and whiteouts, and Highway 10 between Orangeville and Shelburne is sometimes closed during bad storms. With limited transit options in the county, having a reliable driver makes a real difference.
