Where the Waterways Meet
Long before the highways arrived, this was a meeting place. The lands between Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay were home to the Wendat, whose homeland was known as Wendake. Indigenous peoples fished the Narrows between Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching for thousands of years, and the ancient wooden fish weirs there, near present-day Orillia, are now a National Historic Site. In 1639, French Jesuits built Sainte-Marie among the Hurons near what is now Midland. Later, John Graves Simcoe, the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada, named the lake in honour of his father, and the Simcoe name has marked the region ever since.
During the War of 1812, supplies moved overland along the Nine Mile Portage from Kempenfelt Bay to Willow Creek, then down the Nottawasaga River toward Georgian Bay. The story of the schooner HMS Nancy is still told today on Nancy Island at Wasaga Beach.
The Trent-Severn Waterway still winds through Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching, but these days most travellers arrive by road. We think the ride deserves as much care as the destination.
