A Story Written Along the Shoreline
Grey and Bruce counties are the traditional territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, made up of the Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation and the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation. Both communities remain on the Bruce Peninsula and along the Saugeen River today.
Compared to much of southern Ontario, this area was settled late. Treaties signed in the 1830s and 1850s opened the land to settlement, and colonization roads carried families north from Toronto. Owen Sound, first known as Sydenham, grew into a busy Great Lakes port. It was also a final stop on the Underground Railroad for many freedom seekers, and its Emancipation Festival, first held in 1862, is one of the longest-running celebrations of its kind in North America. The city also produced First World War flying ace Billy Bishop, whose name is now on Toronto’s island airport, while painter Tom Thomson grew up just outside town.
Along the Lake Huron shore, tall stone lighthouses known as the Imperial Towers were built to guide ships past dangerous shoals. In the 1960s, Douglas Point near Kincardine became home to Canada’s first full-scale nuclear power station. Today, the Bruce Power site next door is one of the largest nuclear generating facilities in the world and a major employer for the region.
Travelling Grey and Bruce
Getting to Grey-Bruce usually means a long drive. Highway 10 runs north from Orangeville to Owen Sound, Highway 6 connects Guelph to Owen Sound and continues up the peninsula to Tobermory, Highway 26 follows the Georgian Bay shoreline from Collingwood through Thornbury and Meaford, and Highway 21 traces the Lake Huron coast from Kincardine to Southampton. Many trips from the Toronto area take two to four hours, depending on your destination.
