Long before the first survey lines were drawn, this was Indigenous land, and several nations still call it home. The Algonquin Anishinaabe have deep roots along the Ottawa River and its tributaries. The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte have lived at Tyendinaga since 1784. Near Cornwall, the territory of the Mohawks of Akwesasne crosses the borders of Ontario, Quebec, and New York State.
Much of the modern map took shape after the American Revolution. Thousands of Loyalists moved north and were granted land along the St. Lawrence and the Bay of Quinte in the 1780s. Kingston grew quickly as a naval base and trading town, and in 1841 it became the first capital of the Province of Canada. Sir John A. Macdonald practised law there before his political career took off. In 1832 the Rideau Canal opened between Kingston and Bytown, the settlement that later became Ottawa. It was built as a military supply route that kept clear of the American border. Today the canal and Kingston’s fortifications, including Fort Henry, together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The river has shaped this area in other ways too. The Battle of Crysler’s Farm was fought near Morrisburg in 1813. On July 1, 1958, construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway flooded a string of riverside communities now remembered as the Lost Villages. Families were relocated to the new towns of Ingleside and Long Sault, and many historic buildings were moved to what became Upper Canada Village. Farther upriver, Brockville is home to Canada’s first railway tunnel. It was completed in 1860 and is now open to walk through, with a light display running its full length.
Highway 401 is the backbone of the region. It runs east from Trenton through Belleville, Kingston, Brockville, and Cornwall before crossing into Quebec, and it carries a heavy share of the truck traffic between Toronto and Montreal. Highway 416 branches north near Prescott toward Ottawa. Highway 417 heads east from Ottawa to the Quebec border and west toward Arnprior, and Highway 7 links Ottawa with Carleton Place and Perth. Closer to the water, the Loyalist Parkway (Highway 33) follows the shore from Trenton through Prince Edward County to Kingston, with a free ferry crossing at Glenora. The Thousand Islands Parkway winds along the river between Gananoque and Brockville.
Winter here often brings ice rather than deep snow. Freezing rain is a regular problem from December through March, and the 1998 ice storm left parts of eastern Ontario without power for weeks. On open stretches of the 416 and 417, blowing snow can cut visibility to almost nothing in minutes. Fog also rises off the St. Lawrence in spring and fall. Summer has its own slowdowns: Friday traffic on the 401, lineups at Sandbanks on hot weekends, and busy roads around Gananoque when the tour boats are running. It depends on where you’re headed. Ottawa International Airport is the most convenient for Ottawa, the Ottawa Valley, Lanark County, and much of Leeds and Grenville. Montréal-Trudeau often makes more sense for Cornwall, Glengarry, and Hawkesbury. For Belleville, Trenton, and Prince Edward County, Toronto Pearson is usually the better choice. In normal conditions, plan on about two hours from Belleville, two and a half hours from Picton, two and three-quarter hours from Kingston, three and a half hours from Brockville, and just over four hours from Cornwall. Friday afternoons and winter storms can add time, and we set departure times with that in mind.
