Haldimand County takes its name from Sir Frederick Haldimand, the colonial governor who in 1784 set aside land along the Grand River for the Six Nations, who had fought alongside the British during the American Revolution. The county is part of the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Neutral peoples. Six Nations of the Grand River and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, who settled near Hagersville in 1847, remain close neighbours today.
In the early 1800s, the Grand River became a working waterway. A dam built at Dunnville in 1829 fed water into the new Welland Canal, and the town grew up around it. The Grand River Navigation Company later added locks and dams upstream so boats could travel inland toward Brantford, and river towns like Cayuga and York grew along the way. On land, the Hamilton and Port Dover Plank Road, built in the 1840s, turned Caledonia into a busy stop between Hamilton and Lake Erie. Much of that old route is now Highway 6.
The 20th century brought heavy industry to the Lake Erie shore at Nanticoke, while most of the county stayed rural. Haldimand became a single-tier county in 2001, when the former Regional Municipality of Haldimand-Norfolk was dissolved.
Travelling Through Haldimand County
Highway 6 is the backbone of the county, running from Hamilton through Caledonia, Hagersville, and Jarvis toward Lake Erie. Highway 3 crosses east to west, linking Jarvis, Cayuga, and Dunnville, and Highway 54 follows the Grand River between Caledonia and Cayuga. There are no major expressways inside the county, and public transit is very limited, so most trips mean driving on two-lane roads.
Those roads come with their own challenges: slow farm equipment during planting and harvest, long unlit stretches after dark, and lake-effect snow and wind blowing in off Lake Erie in winter.
