A Region Shaped by Water, Rail, and Industry
Long before the towns took shape, Anishinaabe peoples, including the Mississaugas, lived and travelled along the north shore of Lake Ontario and the inland lakes beyond it. The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation continue that connection today on the shores of Lake Scugog.
Settlement followed the lakeshore and the old Kingston Road, and the arrival of the Grand Trunk Railway in the 1850s helped turn farming villages into manufacturing towns. Oshawa’s story took a big turn in 1876, when Robert McLaughlin moved his carriage business there. His son Sam started building McLaughlin cars in 1907, and by 1918 the company had become General Motors of Canada, earning Oshawa its reputation as the country’s automotive capital. Sam’s home, Parkwood Estate, is now a National Historic Site and a regular backdrop for film and TV shoots.
Other towns have their own stories. Ajax took its name from HMS Ajax, the Royal Navy cruiser celebrated after the 1939 Battle of the River Plate, and grew up around a wartime munitions plant. Many of its streets still carry the names of the ship’s crew. In Leaskdale, just north of Uxbridge, Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote several of her novels while living in the village manse. The Regional Municipality of Durham officially came together in 1974, uniting eight municipalities from Pickering to Brock.

Highway 401 does most of the heavy lifting here, and anyone who has crawled eastbound past the Rouge at rush hour knows how slow it can get. Highway 407 and the 412 and 418 connectors have added more options, but choosing the right one still depends on the time of day. Farther north, travel slows down for different reasons: two-lane country roads, tractors during planting and harvest, and snow drifting across open farmland in winter.
